We are told, as we learn about managing our finances, ordering our groceries and buying items that we like or need, to only buy what we need, that any more than that is a waste. And, it is true, this is the case with finite resources such as food, money and material possessions. But when it comes to ephemeral products like internet connectivity, telephone and mobile call allowances and all the features that broadband and mobile phone suppliers offer us, things are a little different: there is not a finite amount of data in the world that we must share between ourselves, or rather, there is so much data available that it is almost foolish to limit ourselves from signing up for as much data as we can use.

What’s New?

Previously, there was a reason for caution. Bandwidth was made available in increments, and as demand wildly exceeded supply, neighbours would find that their internet was all but impossible to use at certain times, as the entire area all tried to log on at once, each using an entire telephone line’s worth of bandwidth. High-speed broadband is infinitely faster and uses a mere fraction of the bandwidth, meaning that even if the entire suburb is tuning into watch the latest viral video, or all doing their online shopping at the same time, everyone’s computer or device should be able to operate without any lagging or buffering issues.

Streaming Services Go MainstreamThere are a number of streaming services, many of which can be accessed on smart TVs which connect to the broadband, as well as being accessible on portable devices like laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Few families sit around the television to watch their favourite shows as much as they used to, so it is not impossible for a family of four or five to all be connected to one or more streaming sites, all watching high-definition films and TV shows at the same time in different rooms of the house. High-definition video footage chews up an incredible amount of data, and anyone who is still on a small data package may well find their viewing pleasure only lasts for a few days or a week per month, before incurring excess charges or cutting off until the renew date comes around.

So Many DevicesAt the same time that the family are all watching their shows, they will all have mobile phones connected to the home broadband, along with games consoles, computers, and other internet connected devices, many of which rely on having a permanent or near-permanent internet connection so they can download updates and send and receive messages and even internet-enabled phone calls. Almost everything from banking to shopping to staying in touch with friends old and new is done via a broadband connection these days – and if we are honest, we would not go back to the days of having to plan trips to the bank, writing snail-mail letters and dragging around the supermarket with an overburdened trolley.

And Even More DevicesAs well as the above devices, other features in your home use your broadband too: Smart TVs, GPS systems, even fridges are getting ‘smart’ and tracking your food usage, and smart metres to monitor and control your energy usage.

Trying to keep track of how much data all these items use, as well as personal devices as mentioned in the previous paragraph, it becomes very easy to see why unlimited broadband is the way to go!

Comparison sites like Broadband Choices can help you to make sure you get the best deal at the best price for your unlimited broadband and data – if you’ve not upgraded for a while, you might find you’ve been paying for services that are now included in a bundle with many other advantages. The beauty of using a comparison site means that you will get to see the best possible range of deals to both suit your needs and save you time and money.
